How Extreme Heat is Impacting India
Organization: Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW)
Year: 2025

The Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) has conducted a comprehensive assessment titled “How Extreme Heat is Impacting India: Assessing District-level Heat Risk,” analyzing 734 districts using 35 indicators encompassing hazard, exposure, and vulnerability. The study reveals that 57% of Indian districts, home to 76% of the population, are at high to very high risk from extreme heat. Notably, very warm nights have increased more rapidly than hot days, with nearly 70% of districts experiencing five or more additional very warm nights per summer over the past decade. This trend hampers the human body’s ability to recover from daytime heat, exacerbating health risks. The report emphasizes the need for heat risk-informed planning, advocating for updated heat action plans that consider night-time temperatures and humidity. It also highlights the importance of targeted solutions, such as sustainable cooling strategies, to mitigate the growing threat of extreme heat across India’s diverse regions. The Times of India+4
